The new law requires banks and credit card companies to implement a merchant category code for California businesses that have, or are expected to have, the highest sales volume of firearms, gun accessories, or ammunition in the state. …
The codes will allow banks and credit card companies to flag suspicious purchases, according to the bill’s author Assemblyman Philip Ting.
“Financial institutions can now be a part of our [gun-tracking] efforts since they are in a unique position to notice buying patterns that no one else can,” Mr. Ting said in a press release June 25. “When stockpiling of firearms and ammunition appears to take place, alerting authorities can be instrumental in helping California prevent tragedies and save lives.”
The new law Assembly Bill 1587, which passed last year, will require the four-digit codes to be used in firearms sales, similar to how they are used to track travel, restaurants, groceries, and other items. …
Colorado and New York also passed firearms code mandates that will take effect in May 2025. …
Gun rights organizations have spoken out against the use of merchant codes for firearms purchases.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) called the practice “dangerous,” saying states will use the code to enact further gun control. …
Meanwhile, laws in 14 states—including Georgia, Tennessee, and Iowa—ban the use of such codes in gun shops.

The US homicide rate is 6.3 per 100,000 people, compared with Japan 0.2; UK 1.1; Australia 0.8; Canada 2.2. To maintain America as the mass shooting ‘capital’ the western world we need slack rules with as many guns in circulation as possible. Guns do not make you safe – they do the opposite.
This law in California does not even address the issue of guns that can be make by 3D printers. Criminals who have ill intent will circumvent the laws of coding guns sales bought legally. Help us have wisdom Lord and protect us with your heavenly protection. I Jesus’ name.
Please exercise gun reform and stop school shooting.
Kids are dying.
Father, please stop this infringement on our 2nd amendment, leading to taking the guns away. May it go to court and be declared unconstitutional.
