Just 24 hours after the Supreme Court’s announcement, several of the large groups which had gathered at the border in El Paso, Texas, had dispersed.

Before and after photographs also show a stark contrast with the chaotic scenes that have played out through December.

The Supreme Court ruled by a 5-4 vote to keep Title 42 in place just hours ahead of its planned end at midnight on Tuesday.

The Covid-era public health policy, which allows border agents to immediately expel migrants, will now remain in place for at least several more months.

Before the court’s decision, tens of thousands of migrants had massed along the border in Mexico.

Many believed they stood a better chance of crossing into the US and remaining if Title 42 was canned.

During a visit to the border on Wednesday afternoon, Sergeant Eliot Torres, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told DailyMail.com that the extension ‘helps a lot’. …

Several pockets of people were gathered on the Mexican side, apparently planning their entry, but the situation was far less chaotic than in the days and weeks before Title 42’s extension.

One photo obtained by DailyMail.com of an incident on December 20 shows a crowd of more than 100 people, including babies and young children, gathered at the razor wire as they tried to enter the US.

The crowd were in an hours-long standoff with border officials and armed National Guard troops into the night, when temperatures plunged to near-freezing, before they finally dispersed.

The exact same spot, which has been a frequent crossing point, was clear on Wednesday, 24 hours after Title 42 was extended. …

Other officials stationed around the border in El Paso also acknowledged the situation appeared to have calmed in the hours since the Supreme Court announcement.

Some said it was too early to know whether the decision will lead to a prolonged period of calm.

Illegal crossings have also continued at some points along the border. Those determined enough to do so are still able to enter the US and avoid detection. …
