The media is biased.
That statement doesn’t shock anyone, we know it is true. But what is shocking is when that bias is outed by one of their own and makes the news. Like it did when Bari Weiss resigned the other day.
Who is Bari Weiss, you say? Weiss was a New York Times op-ed staff editor and writer who has outed the New York Times internal systems of bias when she publically published her resignation letter on her personal website. It is quite an indictment of the atmosphere of bias, intimidation, and censorship at the New York Times. Before you assume that Weiss must be a conservative–she’s not.
Although Weiss says she is not one for labels, Vanity Fair has described her as a “liberal humanist.” She says the New York Times hired her “with the goal of bringing in voices that would not otherwise appear in your pages: first-time writers, centrists, conservatives and others who would not naturally think of The Times as their home.” Her mandate from the NYT was the reaction to the 2016 election, when a candidate that liberals thought stood no chance of winning pulled off a victory they never saw coming. The Times wanted to keep their finger on the pulse of the rest of America through Weiss’s contributions.
But fulfilling that purpose by cultivating op-ed pieces from voices that were a slight departure from the far-left progressives the paper normally caters to was painful for Wiess. She describes, …”but the lessons that ought to have followed the election—lessons about the importance of understanding other Americans, the necessity of resisting tribalism, and the centrality of the free exchange of ideas to a democratic society—have not been learned. Instead, a new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.”
You aren’t imagining when you get the idea that many members of the press and their bosses feel that they know best how things should be. They do think they know how things should be. Weiss, a Jew herself and a voice against anti-semitism, explains that by not writing and editing in lockstep with the rest of leftist New York Times writers, she has been the subject of bullying by colleagues who disagree with her viewpoints. “They have called me a Nazi and a racist; I have learned to brush off comments about how I’m “writing about the Jews again.” Several colleagues perceived to be friendly with me were badgered by coworkers. My work and my character are openly demeaned on company-wide Slack channels where masthead editors regularly weigh in. There, some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly “inclusive” one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still, other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are.”
What Weiss describes next is more than many media watchers had anticipated. She explains how the New York Times capitulates and caters to Twitter. How their stories are framed and created to hit the liberal Twitter audience. In fact, she calls Twitter the New York Times’ “ultimate editor.” Describing the dynamic, Weiss says that stories “are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions.”
Is this just her personal experience? Is this only happening at the New York Times? No, it is not.
Overall, she describes that in the media, “intellectual curiosity—let alone risk-taking—is now a liability.” So what happens when this atmosphere is pervasive in media, the atmosphere of only one voice being heard–such as what she experienced at The Times? Weiss shares that for many journalist, intellectual curiosity gave way to a sense of futility. “Why edit something challenging to our readers, or write something bold only to go through the numbing process of making it ideologically kosher, when we can assure ourselves of job security (and clicks) by publishing our 4000th op-ed arguing that Donald Trump is a unique danger to the country and the world? And so self-censorship has become the norm.”
In a response to Weiss’s bombshell public resignation, acting Editorial Page Editor Kate Kingsbury refutes the claims of intolerance of opposing and differing views. The fact that Kate Kingsbury is the Acting Editorial Page Editor is in itself an example of The Times’ intolerance. She got the position when the previous Editorial Page Editor, James Bennett, was chased off after “allowing” Senator Tom Cotton to publish an op-ed about protecting our nation’s monuments. The paper castigated Bennett and the Cotton piece saying it “fell short of our standards.”
What was once known as “the paper of record” now only represents a far-left portion of the population that only a slice of America can identify with. Weiss describes it as “the record of those living in a distant galaxy.” A galaxy, she goes on to say, “whose concerns are profoundly removed from the lives of most people. This is a galaxy in which, to choose just a few recent examples, the Soviet space program is lauded for its “diversity”; the doxxing of teenagers in the name of justice is condoned; and the worst caste systems in human history includes the United States alongside Nazi Germany.”
Does everyone at The Times or any media organization hold all these same beliefs? Weiss doesn’t think so. From her experience, the overwhelming pressure from the “woke” and loud and self-righteous on staff keep a lid on those who think otherwise through the hateful, hostile, and harassing behavior that keeps the dissenters quiet and in fear for their job. They have, of course, landed a position at the iconic journalistic institution in our nation. They are afraid to lose it.
And the election of 2016? Perhaps the lesson escapes the high-brow liberal editors, publishers, and writers but it hasn’t escaped Weiss. “Americans still hunger for news that is accurate, opinions that are vital, and debate that is sincere. I hear from these people every day.” If The Times won’t give it to them, we only hope those wide and varied opinions and ideas will find a voice and a paper willing to share them.

I pray that as you gave a home to the women of “Silent No More” at the March for life, so too you would give Weiss a home with individuals such as Dave Rubin and Brandon Straka. We pray this also for the Journalists who follow her lead. And we pray for them as we have prayed for these other non Christians who have left the Left, that their truth seeking and truth telling will ultimately lead them to THE Truth, who is a person, and His name is Jesus. Having never read the New York Times, unless it is quoted elsewhere, I have this supreme peace that allows me to discern its errors and I am not one of the favored few in intellect. The wisdom from above is what is lacking. Isn’t it amazing how God is uncovering and revealing things long hidden? He is Truth!!! Bari should be very grateful to be a Jewish woman. She just needs to ask for wisdom from God and trust Him. I do pray for her to come to the saving knowledge of her Messiah, Yeshua!
Yes Lord, You are beginning to peal back the first layer of the Bias in media. I thank you, even though we as Christians tolerated this disease a long time in the making. It’s far worse than the pandemic. Perhaps not having church is a good thing. Now we have time to engage the most relevant issues of the day – us.
I respectively disagree, ” Peel back the first layer ” was done years ago ! It is just now that someone other than Fox News and One America News, at these corrupt news organizations will actually say something just before they resign and leave. People who left this company ( NYT ) some years past have spoken AFTER they left. This lady spoke up just before leaving. Late to the game. But yes she did speak out late to the game.

Please raise up warriors to bring us truthful news. And tear down the strongholds within media that are swaying so many people to believe things that will lead to the destruction of our nation. Thank you, Father, for answered prayer. I have, and know many others have, been praying that individuals working within the mainstream media would rise up and reveal publicly the truth of what is happening on the inside. MSM is no longer reporting news but opinion disguised as news to promote a specific ideology.
Because I prayed, I expected exposure to happen, but admit I didn’t expect it to come from someone like Bari Weiss. I’m familiar with her work and opinions as a liberal humanist and they seemed in alignment with much of what we hear from people on the left of politics. And precisely because Ms. Weiss has such a large following of people on the left and those who don’t consider themselves political at all, NYT and others in media are scrambling to discount what she has revealed. I believe her revelation is only the beginning as I expect others will now have courage to speak out.

Weeks ago, the Ruach Hakodesh told to stop and tell others to stop “watching the Dancing Cobra (Laim Street Media).” When we do, we lose our focus on The Great Commission. Satan is distracting us by getting us upset. We are called to heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, all as a means of verifying the love of God and the teaching of the Gospel of Yeshua Ha’Mashiach. How can we show our peace if after “watching the Dancing Cobra” we are upset ?
God bless and protect Bari Weiss, as she courageously stands up to the powers of Satan in the media. We must pray that others will follow, and that the dependence on their livelihood will not be a cause to continue working at these evil outlets. May the Holy Spirit lead them to a place where their voices can ring out the truth.

This is not shocking news! She worked in what Sean Hannity news anchor calls the Toilet Paper Times/New York Times. She is a so called liberal, Hilliary supporter etc. Just not ” WOKE ” enough. Is it a surprise these

Many have been praying for a total makeover of the media. They need to get back to basics and be honest and be people of Integrity. It’s someone in that workplace tries to make you report something that is against what you believe you need to leave that place because that’s bullying. There’s too much of it going on the one I dislike the most is PBS I have never seen the like of it. Those people speak nothing but evil of their President Donald J trump it is abusive demonic and outright stupid. If you sit under stupid long enough you’ll be stupid to. So yes I will pray for this young lady that God will commend her for taking the stand that she did in that she will get on the right track and do things God’s way and he will protect her and she will be promoted as a good media reporter. What an answer to prayer that this thing is turning around. No more fake news.

Talk about a courageous individual. as we pray for truth to overcome the darkness in this world here is a perfect example of courage where her conscience was more important then a paycheck. May she be a challenge to others who need this fresh testimony of paying attention to ones conscience and stepping out o their comfort zones and reporting the news correctly and not with secular bias. This article is actually an answer to prayer for me and I pray just the beginning. My prayer has been that any media person of faith, or even of moderate or conservative values would stand up to the manipulation even if it costs them their jobs. I also pray for these courageous people, that God would protect them from the cancel culture, bless them and give them even better jobs.

It is very hard to stand up for truth in a world gone mad with so much hate talk and encouraging others to throw in their stones. Bari is brave and God has a plan for her. The Epoch Times is the paper I read. There is no hate speech burning up the columns but just the news and the truth. I guess it is more conservative in nature in that it finds the evil in this country to be called good by the more liberal papers. I listened to Jeremiah Johnson this morning, and I believe he is correct. The media is the false prophet – telling us “the truth” only to be telling lies. Perhaps we have been waiting for a person to be the false prophet when in reality the false prophet is an entity. ???
I pray that the Lord brings forth more voices for truth and not held by their peers, but by the truth. I thank God that the truth is coming forth and I pray a lot of others follow Bari Weiss in telling us the goings on in truth so people can see it is not as it seems. Walk by faith and not by sight. My first reaction is, this is fantastic! A young liberal reporter telling it like it is! To me, that says there is hope – there are thinking young people out there who are seeing the truth about all the deception and manipulation that’s going on in the media – and now someone is speaking up about it – even at the risk of public humiliation by her peers. Of course that’s the left liberal way of doing things – since you KNOW you’re lying about stuff, if someone dares to disagree with you, just insult and slander the speaker (ad hominem). Yes, let’s pray for Bari Weiss (even her protection, maybe) and for others who see her bold stance to have courage to speak up, too.
This reminds me of the state of life in George Orwell’s book 1984.

Father Thank you for this answer to prayer. We have been praying for true journalists to get fed up with not being allowed to report true news. I ask your protection on Bari and that she will find a place to have a true journalistic job. Please stir the hearts of others to see the outcome of the present path. Make them willing to stand up. You are the God of truth. We ask for truth to prevail. May we stand with these people who are having to make a public stand for what’s true and right.
I have prayed for the media for years. We are winning against the schemes of the enemy. More prayer the more truth comes forth. The battle is the Lord’s. We must stand firm. He is working! Hear the still voice&His ROAR. We win in His time alone.
I experienced this myself first hand when I went back to college to get my degree in journalism. The Professor was very hostile to me and did his best to embarrass me anytime he could because I was not a liberal as he was, and besides that, I was older than him. I tried my best to offer a more balanced view of the news. He even liked to make fun of how I dressed! I do pray for Bari Weiss and pray that God will raise up other brave voices who will stand against the tide of biased journalism. News needs to be unbiased and fair to all people, not just the “Elites.”

Let your truth go shining in, Father and let it be undeniable, in Jesus’ name, amen.
Father, raise up voices of truth anointed by your Spirit to battle the oracles of deception speaking through every form of expression that educates people. Give these oracles of truth words that cannot be refuted. A sharp sword that divides soulish deceptions from spiritual truth and quickens the heart of man to You. Break the stranglehold of the spirit of python, that lying oracle off of the institutions of government and media and education and medicine and business and the arts. Exalt your voice in our nation I pray, in Jesus’ name.
Father God, I pray for this lady who wrote this op-ed and pray for her protection. In the name of Jesus, we come to you Father and we pray that you may wake up the people Lord, we bind the blinders, confusion, hate by many just because the media says so, that many Americans will start to do their own research. We loose your holy angelic warring angels and lift up the blinders bring your people to the light and in the name of Jesus !! Amen
This woman is really a strong and brave woman and an example to others how to stand up for what you believe, May God Bless her and her family, it took a lot for her to do what she did. I pray others will do the same. I have been praying for the media so maybe she will start a movement for honesty in reporting. I agree wholeheartly with the post of Judy Buckley.

May her words have a resounding impact on other journalists fighting suppression and embolden others to stand for truth. Thank you for Your Holy Spirit led reasoning in her letter. If the Pilgrim’s and the Strangers could come together to form the Mayflower Compact, let us stand in support and unity with our fellow Americans wherever truth and justice can be found.
