I Prayed have prayed
Lord, thank you for Betsy DeVos and thank you for her sensible approach to the huge problem of student loan debt.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos unveiled her vision for the future of federal government’s student lending programs, proposing to make the Federal Student Aid (FSA) office into a bank-like agency independent of her department.

Overseeing more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding loans to 42 million borrowers, the FSA has become the nation’s top consumer lender, according to DeVos in a Tuesday speech at the Federal Student Aid Training Conference in Reno, Nevada. She argued that the Education Department should get out of the banking business.

“Congress never set up the U.S. Department of Education to be a bank, nor did it define the secretary of education as the nation’s ‘top banker,’” said DeVos, clarifying the role her department should be playing in the student loan business. “But that’s effectively what Congress expects based on its policies.”

DeVos told the crowd that the inherent problem with government-run student aid lies in the FSA’s structure, which is “set up to serve politicians and their policies.” As the Congress and the past administrations continued to meddle with student loan programs, the FSA has become a cumbersome mess that confuses students and parents.

When graduates start repaying their federal loans, according to DeVos, they are faced with eight different repayment plans, each with different eligibility requirements. There are at least 30 deferment options, 14 loan forgiveness programs, and 11 different providers, each comes with its own websites, phone numbers, and forms to be filled out.

“Is it any surprise…that both principal and interest are currently being paid down for only one in four loans? Nearly 11 million borrowers have loans that are delinquent or in default? And 43 percent of all loans are considered ‘in distress?’” she asked.

DeVos’ plan to tackle the problem involves turning the FSA into an independent entity somewhat similar to the Federal Reserve, or in her own words, “a standalone government corporation, run by a professional, expert, and apolitical Board of Governors.”

The proposal, although far from detailed, would allow the overhauled student loan bureaucracy to make its own rules for repayment plans and forgiveness options without having to answer to Congress, so that it could truly focuses on providing students with better services.

Making such sweeping reforms to a federal bureaucracy would ultimately require the approval of an increasingly partisan Congress, which is trying to move forward an impeachment process against DeVos’ boss.

“President Trump and this administration are committed to transforming Federal Student Aid for students,” DeVos said. “Congress needs to come alongside us to make this happen.”

(Excerpt from The Epoch Times.)

Let’s pray for this common sense proposal to a huge national problem!

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we pray that you will bless the fruit of Betsy DeVos hands and that you will download kingdom insight and wisdom that births an overhaul. Father, so many entered into this place of abundant debt from a place of ignorance, being unlearned, ill-equipped with knowledge and information and unaware of the consequences. Father we pray that systems of forgiveness and supernatural debt cancellations will manifest. I decree fresh starts, in the name of Jesus Christ.

    Amen and Amen! Yes, LORD, show Yourself mighty on behalf of people who have sought an education so they can contribute to our nation and our world.
    I agree that systems of forgiveness and supernatural debt cancellations will manifest and that fresh starts are decreed.
    Please bless Betsy DeVoss and guide her with Your wisdom. Help her to accomplish all that You intend for her to do in this position of leadership where You have placed her.
    Remove those people in the Department of Education who are choosing to undermine and work against her. Fill her department, office, and staff with ones of Your choosing who will help and support Secretary DeVoss.
    LORD God, we ask all this in the name of Jesus, the Name that is above all names.

Ron, you are correct. The HS teachers in our county push all the students to attend whichever college they prefer…regardless of the price. They tell students who do not have the funds for college that they need the full college experience and they encourage the students to follow their own dreams (even when the parents say “no” to a particular college/ university). Not only does the student loan system need to be revamped but the brainwashing of our students by HS educators needs to come to an end.

    Oh, my God, been saying this for years. I work as an AVID counselor and saw first hand how some HS teachers and counselors would push students to this very thing and disregard the parents who would say no, start at a community college. I advocate for HS graduate to start at a community college. This Word came to mind while reading your post. God Bless you. I agree.

    Amos 3 English Standard Version (ESV) (Israel’s Guilt and Punishment)
    3 Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:

    2 “You only have I known
    of all the families of the earth;
    therefore I will punish you
    for all your iniquities.

    3 “Do two walk together,
    unless they have agreed to meet?
    4 Does a lion roar in the forest,
    when he has no prey?
    Does a young lion cry out from his den,
    if he has taken nothing?
    5 Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth,
    when there is no trap for it?
    Does a snare spring up from the ground,
    when it has taken nothing?
    6 Is a trumpet blown in a city,
    and the people are not afraid?
    Does disaster come to a city,
    unless the Lord has done it?

    7 “For the Lord God does nothing
    without revealing his secret
    to his servants the prophets.
    8 The lion has roared;
    who will not fear?
    The Lord God has spoken;
    who can but prophesy?”

    9 Proclaim to the strongholds in Ashdod
    and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt,
    and say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria,
    and see the great tumults within her,
    and the oppressed in her midst.”
    10 “They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,
    “those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”

    11 Therefore thus says the Lord God:

    “An adversary shall surround the land
    and bring down your defenses from you,
    and your strongholds shall be plundered.”

    12 Thus says the Lord: “As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.

    13 “Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob,”
    declares the Lord God, the God of hosts,
    14 “that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions,
    I will punish the altars of Bethel,
    and the horns of the altar shall be cut off
    and fall to the ground.
    15 I will strike the winter house along with the summer house,
    and the houses of ivory shall perish,
    and the great houses shall come to an end,”
    declares the Lord. Amen.

Lord, find a way for Betsy DeVos to smooth track the student loans,it was a debacle from the former administration giving students easy money for school which many didn’t finish or never intended to complete. Now they are saddled with debt and probably low paying jobs. Finances aren’t taught and free money has a nice ring to it until you have to repay it. It is not by our might but by your strength, Lord that solutions will be found. Bless Betsy DeVos with wise counsel and make a way, if this is your will, for success in her plans.

    Praise the Lord, I agree. This Word came to mind after reading your post. God Bless you.

    Isaiah 45 English Standard Version (ESV) (Cyrus, God’s Instrument)

    Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,
    whose right hand I have grasped,
    to subdue nations before him
    and to loose the belts of kings,
    to open doors before him
    that gates may not be closed:
    2 “I will go before you
    and level the exalted places,
    I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
    and cut through the bars of iron,
    3 I will give you the treasures of darkness
    and the hoards in secret places,
    that you may know that it is I, the Lord,
    the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
    4 For the sake of my servant Jacob,
    and Israel my chosen,
    I call you by your name,
    I name you, though you do not know me.
    5 I am the Lord, and there is no other,
    besides me there is no God;
    I equip you, though you do not know me,
    6 that people may know, from the rising of the sun
    and from the west, that there is none besides me;
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.
    7 I form light and create darkness;
    I make well-being and create calamity;
    I am the Lord, who does all these things.

    8 “Shower, O heavens, from above,
    and let the clouds rain down righteousness;
    let the earth open, that salvation and righteousness may bear fruit;
    let the earth cause them both to sprout;
    I the Lord have created it.

    9 “Woe to him who strives with him who formed him,
    a pot among earthen pots!
    Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
    or ‘Your work has no handles’?
    10 Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’
    or to a woman, ‘With what are you in labor?’”

    11 Thus says the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel, and the one who formed him:
    “Ask me of things to come;
    will you command me concerning my children and the work of my hands?
    12 I made the earth
    and created man on it;
    it was my hands that stretched out the heavens,
    and I commanded all their host.
    13 I have stirred him up in righteousness,
    and I will make all his ways level;
    he shall build my city
    and set my exiles free,
    not for price or reward,”
    says the Lord of hosts.

    The Lord, the Only Savior
    14 Thus says the Lord:
    “The wealth of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush,
    and the Sabeans, men of stature,
    shall come over to you and be yours;
    they shall follow you;
    they shall come over in chains and bow down to you.
    They will plead with you, saying:
    ‘Surely God is in you, and there is no other,
    no god besides him.’”

    15 Truly, you are a God who hides himself,
    O God of Israel, the Savior.
    16 All of them are put to shame and confounded;
    the makers of idols go in confusion together.
    17 But Israel is saved by the Lord
    with everlasting salvation;
    you shall not be put to shame or confounded
    to all eternity.

    18 For thus says the Lord,
    who created the heavens
    (he is God!),
    who formed the earth and made it
    (he established it;
    he did not create it empty,
    he formed it to be inhabited!):
    “I am the Lord, and there is no other.
    19 I did not speak in secret,
    in a land of darkness;
    I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
    ‘Seek me in vain.’
    I the Lord speak the truth;
    I declare what is right.

    20 “Assemble yourselves and come;
    draw near together,
    you survivors of the nations!
    They have no knowledge
    who carry about their wooden idols,
    and keep on praying to a god
    that cannot save.
    21 Declare and present your case;
    let them take counsel together!
    Who told this long ago?
    Who declared it of old?
    Was it not I, the Lord?
    And there is no other god besides me,
    a righteous God and a Savior;
    there is none besides me.

    22 “Turn to me and be saved,
    all the ends of the earth!
    For I am God, and there is no other.
    23 By myself I have sworn;
    from my mouth has gone out in righteousness
    a word that shall not return:
    ‘To me every knee shall bow,
    every tongue shall swear allegiance.’

    24 “Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me,
    are righteousness and strength;
    to him shall come and be ashamed
    all who were incensed against him.
    25 In the Lord all the offspring of Israel
    shall be justified and shall glory.” Amen.

When President Carter created the Dept. Of Education (40 years ago) it was a watershed moment in Education across the nation.

So many good intentions in student loans program. It is a system that is broken, and it is tied into legislation & politics. Civil Rights in the late 60’s paved the way for many Entitlement initiatives. Title 1 probably the largest funded entitlement in Education. There were more to follow.

Higher Education Act 1965,
Vocational Educ. Act 1963,
General Educ. Provisions Act (creating a National Foundation for Postsecondary Education and a National Institute of Education),
Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, are just a few of the initiatives. FAFSA/FSA addressed the need to assist students to rise above their station, chase the American Dream.

Having taught HS in Chicago area, FAFSA was advertised as “free money” for college. The HS population was highly latino with 40%+ undocumented, mean family income $28,000. The Dream Act was proposed before I retired. Also very popular in our community. Always the problem, who will pay for it?

Pray that Betsy DeVos can restructure FSA as proposed, there is a long history with student loans. 11 million loans in default is alarming. Even Chase would faulter under that load.

College is not for everyone. 21% of all careers need a minimum of four years of school. The remaining 1 to 2 years to enter a field. I taught Voc Ed & IT, and instructed my students to not waste money on expensive education unless they knew what they wanted, otherwise get a job and go to the community college. Don’t rack up debt.

    I agree. I got my Master Degree this past August, 2019 in Higher Education: Educational Leadership. For the very statements you made in your post is why I went to school to get more understanding, comprehension, and knowledge because I am raising 3 children of my own. Not work yet but asking God to order my steps.

    Psalm 119:133-136 King James Version (KJV)

    133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.

    134 Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.

    135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.

    136 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law. Amen.

      Ms. Parham,

      My wife an I finished Graduate School in 2000, at the age of 48-49. Hers was in Curriculum & Development, myself Administration. There are many forces at work to control the minds and hearts of children, requiring vigilance. A heart after God and a desire to Love the children will keep you anchored.

      Psalms 119 is rich indeed! And it is well to meditate on 133-136. Humility is our part in the process of salvation and His sanctification. in V. 129-132 “Your decrees are wonderful, therefore I obey them. The revelation of Your words brings light and gives understanding to the inexperienced. I open my mouth and pant because I long for Your commands. Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is Your practice towards those who love Your name”

      When I was a new Christian in college, God gave me a Christian cooperating teacher for my student teaching experience. Throughout my teaching career He has directed my steps. He provided many opportunities for the gospel simply by living my life before my students and staff. Washing feet every step of the way. Every day is a “New Day” in Jesus, and we can walk into His plans for our life, created before the foundations of the world as it says in Ephesians. Entering His sabbath rest.

      “I love the Lord because He has heard my appeal for mercy. Because He has turned His ear to me, I will call out to Him as long as I live.” Psalms 116:1-2. God will direct you into the position He has. As Corrie Ten Boom liked to say, “Don’t Wrestle, Nestle”!

      Thank you for your response! Congratulations on finishing your Master Degree, I know the hard work, tireless effort, the raising three children while trying to study! Many Blessings as you go forward! I am including lyrics for Shadow Step by Hillsong United. If you have not heard it, it could become a theme song.

      Shadow Step – Hillsong UNITED

      Light up the way of Your heart
      Move me like You do the mountains
      Move me like You do the wind
      And I’ll chase Your voice through the dark
      Fix my eyes on the unexpected
      In the wonder of Your shadow step
      So take another step
      You met me at the sinners table
      I found You waiting by the well, unexpected
      You are always there
      Tracing all my steps
      Light up the way of Your heart
      Move me like You do the mountains
      Move me like You do the wind
      And I’ll chase Your voice through the dark
      Fix my eyes on the unexpected
      In the wonder of Your shadow step
      So take another step
      You never left the lost forsaken
      Your mercy paves the road ahead, unexpected
      You are always good
      You are always good
      Light up the way of Your heart
      Move me like You do the mountains
      Move me like You do the wind
      And I’ll chase Your voice through the dark
      Fix my eyes on the unexpected
      In the wonder of Your shadow step
      And I won’t be afraid
      In every way, You never fail
      So have Your way, here God
      And I’ll sing Your praise
      Fix my heart to Yours
      Ready for the unexpected
      Ready for what You will do next
      I can’t explain Your heart
      Or dare to trace-out all You are
      But when I think about the road You took for love
      I know Your grace will stay the path
      Light up the way of Your heart
      Move me like You do the mountains
      Move me like You do the wind
      And I’ll chase Your voice through the dark
      Fix my eyes on the unexpected
      In the wonder of Your shadow step
      And I won’t be afraid
      In every way, You never fail
      So have Your way, here God
      And I’ll sing Your praise
      Fix my heart to Yours
      Ready for the unexpected
      Ready for what You will do next
      So take another step

    Psalm 145 King James Version (KJV)

    145 I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

    2 Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

    3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

    4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.

    5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

    6 And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.

    7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.

    8 The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

    9 The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

    10 All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and thy saints shall bless thee.

    11 They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;

    12 To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.

    13 Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endure throughout all generations.

    14 The Lord uphold all that fall, and raise up all those that be bowed down.

    15 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou gives them their meat in due season.

    16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfies the desire of every living thing.

    17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

    18 The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

    19 He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

    20 The Lord preserve all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.

    21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever. This I pray in Jesus name, the only begotten Son of God. Amen.

    This word came to mind after reading your post. God Bless you. Amen.

    Deuteronomy 6 English Standard Version (ESV)(The Greatest Commandment)
    6 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules[a]—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

    4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[b] 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

    10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

    16 “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. 17 You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18 And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers 19 by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.

    20 “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. 23 And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. 24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’
