I Prayed have prayed
The human tongue is physically small, but what tremendous effects it can boast of! A whole forest can be set ablaze by a tiny spark of fire, and the tongue is as dangerous as any fire, with vast potentialities for evil. (Jas 3:5-6 Phillips)

This article is not about President Trump. It is about us. About our behavior as followers of Jesus. About our words. About our attitudes. About our priorities.

It seems that many of us have lost sight of what it means to be Christian, as if anything now goes in the name of Jesus.

It seems that many of us now justify almost any kind of ugly rhetoric, as long as it is in the name of country and of God, seemingly in that order.

What has become of godly speech? Of civility? Of graciousness? Of respect? When did God send out the memo that it was now fine for His children to savage one another, to act like animals, to be cruel and cutting and nasty?

It’s one thing if the President sends out a tweet that I find objectionable. He is who he is, for better or for worse. And if he hasn’t changed his style to date, I’m not holding my breath. (Let’s not forget that, from his perspective, his style got him into the White House. Why change now?)

It’s another thing, though, when our comments sound like his, when we ridicule one another and degrade one another and insult one another. And we do this as followers of Jesus?

Of course, the moment I say this, I can hear the critics shouting, “You are so spineless! You are so weak! It’s because of wimps like you that we needed a man like Trump.”

My response to each critic is this: Don’t talk to me about weak. Don’t talk to me about spineless. I have risked my life for Jesus (literally) while preaching the gospel overseas. I have lost everything in the past because I would not compromise my convictions.

Every day our websites are flooded with hateful comments, and I have a file filled with death wishes, along with the occasional death threats.

It’s all because I’m going to speak the truth no matter what, regardless of cost or consequences.

To repeat: Don’t talk to me about being weak.

But there is a difference between being strong and being nasty, just as there is a difference between being gracious and being spineless.

Paul wrote, “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:5–6)

Sorry, but I didn’t get the memo where God rescinded these verses. I didn’t get the memo where He changed the fruit of the Spirit into the works of the flesh (see Galatians 5:17-24).

And the sword cuts both ways. I have seen Christians who are Trump critics bash other Christians who voted for him. “You can’t be a Christian if you voted for Donald Trump! You are an ignorant fool bringing mockery to Christ’s name.”

And I have seen Christian Trump supporters brand anyone who would dare criticize a single thing he says or does as un-American and un-Christian.

Have we lost our corporate minds? Have we lost our individual souls?

To repeat: It’s one thing if the President launches a strongly-worded Twitter attack against Rep. Elijah Cummings or calls Omarosa Manigault a dog.

It’s another thing if our “Christian” discussion of his tweets is just as mean-spirited, just as accusatory, just as nasty.

I recently had a friendly but spirited disagreement with Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson about the Omarosa “dog” tweets, with Rev. Peterson finding the tweets to be both truthful and Christlike. (In my view, the President could have expressed his deep disappointment that someone he trusted betrayed him, thereby creating sympathy for his position rather than alienating others unnecessarily.)

I can point to black leaders who say the President’s tweets against Rep. Cummings were not racist and white leaders who say they were.

But, once again, this article is not about the President.

It is about our responses and our words and our tweets and our comments.

All too often, as I interact with other believers, it seems as if patriotism comes first and Christian behavior second, as if it’s more important to show your allegiance to the flag than to walk in harmony with the Lord.

Earlier I mentioned the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. The former include “enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, and divisions.” The latter are “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”

As children of God, as followers of Jesus, we are called to demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit, especially to a watching world. We are expected to put to death the works of the flesh. Are we?

James (Jacob) wrote, “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:19–21). Perhaps we need to review verses like this?

Perhaps we need to remember Proverbs 15:1? It states, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

What’s strange (and unfortunate) is that some readers will respond to this article with a defense of Trump (who, to say it once more, is not the subject of this article). Others will accuse me of being unpatriotic because, they would argue, at critical times like this, nothing is more important than standing with “God’s man” in the White House.

To each of you who have already formulated your angry response, let me encourage you to read the article again, from beginning to end. But this time, do it with your defenses down and your mind wide open. (And for Trump supporters, remember that I get bashed from other critics for voting for him.)

We are doing great damage with our words, hurting one another and making a mockery of the gospel to outsiders. And we are at the real risk of getting more caught up in a partisan political spirit than in the Holy Spirit.

Paul’s words speak clearly to us today: “But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another” (Galatians 5:15).

Surely, we can do better. (Used with permission. By Dr. Michael Brown. AskDrBrown.org.)

I am guilty. I needed to read this. I know in my spirit that I posts things that are not what Jesus would post on social media. My responses at times are far from Christ-like. Please pray that I will do better. I honestly want to.

I have learned the skill of leaving after prayer in groups. I have found in many cases that the conversation following prayer is more powerful than the prayer and often negates any belief that was in the prayer. This article brings to light what has been happening in churches for nearly 20 years. We have forgotten to whom we speak. It is the One who holds our next breath. The One who created everything. The one who uses his creation to destroy our enemies. God has a storehouse of hail laid up for the day of battle. We need to spend more time with God and His words and let the things of this world grow strangely dim. Think about it for a hot second. To whom do you speak when you pray? The one who formed the ear, shall he not hear? He who formed the eye, won’t he see? We are to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling and in doing so other will want to become like Christ. For an audience of one and to hear Well done. God is able.

I’ve heard a lot of Christians say over the past three years how much they love the way Trump talks. He holds nothing back (including immorality) to get his point across. I think it’s sad to hear the most moral people (Christians) in America joining up with unbelievers who curse, belittle and demonize everyone who disagrees with them. It’s almost hard to tell the saints from the sinners anymore as they blend so well together. Christians should love the way Jesus talked as they try to follow His teaching about love, life, purity, humility and simplicity. We must remember that Christ is about to return to catch His bride away, and He knows the difference between His harmless sheep and uncontrollable goats. We’d better be looking for Him and purifying ourselves even as He is pure. (1 John 3:3) Maranatha = our LORD (property owner) comes!

Dr. Brown–

Under Cummings’ watch through the decades, billions of dollars were allotted to help the impoverished, suffering citizens of rat-infested, drug-infested, crime-ridden Baltimore. Look at Cummings’ results!!!

Most recently, with President Trump $1.8 BILLION was allocated to Baltimore… yet out of half of Baltimore’s high schools … only 14 students are proficient in math! Its crime rate is higher than in Chicago!

The Democrat politicians have stolen the allocated federal tax money from all of us… not spending it on Baltimore’s citizens, schools, infrastructure… etc.

Thank goodness our President has the guts to call out evil when it affects SO many innocent citizens! Thank our Father in Heaven for a man in the Presidency who works for the people!

I guess that you, Dr. Brown, want Baltimore’s citizens to live in squalor and to be denied decent public school education….

I suggest that you go live in Baltimore for at least one month in the neighborhoods that are rat and crime-infested?

I’m certain that you, too, would want to know what happened to the $1.8 BILLION of federal tax money!

Those poor citizens of Baltimore!!!

    Dear Ann,

I recommend that you read Dr. Brown’s article one more time, but this time do it as he recommends with your defenses down and your mind wide open. This article is not about President Trump who I happen to love and pray for every single day. It is about us, Christians. It is about how we deal with each other when we disagree. It is how we are allowing the enemy to divide us and conquer. We are behaving like the world does instead of being the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Our response to each other when we disagree should show love, as the Lord told us. That the world recognize us for the love that we feel for one another. But instead of doing that we are doing the opposite. We don’t honor the Lord and certainly we are not attracting others to Him. Who wants to be a Christian when we behave the way the world does? May the Lord bless you!

Amen! This has been my exact sentiment since the primaries! The Lord spoke to me and told me that I am to be “A Lionesses of Judah”, not an Elephant nor a Donkey! My pastor and godly mentors have confirmed that many times!

We are to pray for our President, no matter who they are. That does not mean we have to be like the world and react in hatred, malice and disrespect towards one another. What has that ever accomplished?

Thank you for taking a stand as HIS body of believers. YES, I did vote for President Trump, YES, I daily pray for him, his family and his administration. YES, I also pray for all of the other elected officials, even though I don’t like most of their policies.

“If my people would repent and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and heal their land”.

HIS PEOPLE!! Lord forgive us!

Thank you so much for this, as it proves that I/we need to stop and repent of our sins in this and take these words of scripture and let them help all of us in the church to not let this behavior/sin dominate us, as we go forward. The harsh words from the media personalities continue to plague us with much division and strife, and I/we need to change our strategy to reflect the truth of God’s word. God is sovereign and He raises up Kings and He takes down Kings. I pray for God’s will for this next leader. Trump has been a bulwark for this nation, and perhaps God put him there with that personality for this reason. This is my prayer for the believers that God will help us take heed to HIS WORD in our response to the things we hear.

Dr. Brown, thank you, very refreshing. As a young Christian I cut my teeth on Leonard Ravenhill, Corrie Ten Boom, William Law, Derrik Prince, Jack Winter, Basilea Schlink….and embraced the Call to Discipleship, learning the language of the Cross. Wide is the road to destruction Narrow is the road to Life. And few find it. (The Cross before me, the world behind me, no turning back).

Like yourself, I voted for Pres. Trump, but after a long time in prayer. He has become like ‘King Cyrus’ for the nation & a wakeup call for the Church. We wrestle not against flesh & blood, but against principalities & powers, evil forces in heavenly places……so we must put in the Full Armour of Christ and be transformed into Christlikeness.

First is the Belt of Truth…I am nothing in myself, but boy, do I have purpose and value in Gods Love. Apart from Him I can do nothing…..I am a nothing, a nobody….but His Love is captivating and sets me free! Free to Love, Free to Serve, Free to be used as a drink offering for the Gospel, unworthy as I am.

Satan plays its games and hides in plain site, it’s called the ‘flesh’ where strongholds are established. Derrik Prince called demons ‘personalities w/o bodies’. Leonard Ravenhill said it best regarding the Holy Spirit, if the Holy Spirit left the early church, 95% of activity would cease, today if the Holy Spirit left the church, 95% of activity would continue. Principled Christianity and 10 step programs do not sustain us in Spiritual Warfare, the Flesh profits us nothing.

Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it. Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind). And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 4:29‭, ‬31‭-‬32 AMPC

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my [firm, impenetrable] Rock and my Redeemer.

I’m all for President Trump and the wrecking of politics he is doing. Exposing evil. But I also know his unnecessary defense of himself may be building opposition to him. I know he has a heart to help all of us be better. May the wisdom he needs come through in such a manner it silences those who try to provoke him. Cover him with love so he can respond in a pleasant way that shits the mouths of his enemies. Thank you Lord Jesus for angels assigned to help him. Amen

Thank you, Dr. Brown — Please continue to communicate this important distinction! We need to remind ourselves Who we’re serving and to pray that our Father will equip the Church in America to be neither deceived nor distracted in seeking God’s kingdom first…

Thank you for writing this, and thank you, IFA, for posting it. I was on the verge of unsubscribing because I saw more lifting up Trump than lifting up Jesus, and our pastor’s sermon text last Sunday stopped me cold:

Jeremiah 17:5-8
Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

Trump is a man with a presidential term limit. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and He shall reign for ever. Let’s look to Him, regardless what Washington does. Because I heard it from one in the know that Trump (who has done many good things) supports HR5. Pray and lift up Jesus, come what may!

Dr. Brown reveals again and again that he does not understand President Trump. President Trump shines a spotlight on people and conditions in our country that carry corruption, evil influence and destruction. He does this because his administration is rooting out money laundering, socialism, human trafficking and human sacrifice. His tweets have a purpose; he is a very purposeful president. He is fighting a big evil and NO, he is not milk toast about it – neither was Jesus.

    Deb
    August 1, 2019

Shari, you can’t compare President Trump and our Lord. Jesus very strongly rebuked the religious leaders for their hypocrisy, however, the Lord never demeaned any one or used foul language to get His point across. President Trump is using very worldly and carnal methods. We need to pray that if President Trump is truly a believer that he becomes conformed to the image of Christ, as that is the daily goal of every believer.

      Shari Bradley
      August 2, 2019

Well, Deb, of course I wasn’t inferring, Hon, that Trump is just like Jesus Christ but comparing one attribute such as demonstrating strength is not slandering Jesus. Of course Jesus did everything perfect and Pres. Trump is not perfect. I must say, however, he is amazingly clever: He is a master of strategy. In tweeting about Baltimore’s rat invested mess and asking where the $15 Billion to help them went, Trump has tied together Cummings, Pelosi, Baltimore, San Francisco and “The Squad” on the fringe of the Party. By the time the smoke had cleared, Trump has forced the entire Democratic Party to embrace the most extreme members of its Party who have made anti-semitic remarks and bashed border agents and are demanding free everything for everybody under their socialist proposals. He put them in the spotlight. He did this on purpose; it was by design. A more politically correct politician would NOT be getting the job done! I know you disagree, but I, along with millions of Patriots, are delighted to see a leader who is tackling the deep-seated evil Cabal head on!

I agree about President Trump. However, I used to often read Dr. Brown’s articles on Charisma news online. If you read the comment section, it’s horrible. Regardless of what one thinks of Trump, he is speaking to the lack of the fruit of the spirit in the discourse by those that profess Christ. I had to leave that site because sometimes it makes you so mad you want to fight back in the flesh.

    August 3, 2019

Agree, Shari. Wanda Alger’s message of July 19, “What Scripturally Qualifies a President to Govern?” clarified for me and others what the Word says regarding our expectations of our government leaders. Referring to this, Wanda made excellent
points: “The Bible refers to civil servants differently from church leaders. Are Christians imposing a standard on our President that is not mandated by Christians? Romans 13:1-6 and Peter 2:13-14 describes the role of governing authorities. 1) God’s servant for the good of the people. 2) A terror of bad conduct, bearing the sword. 3) Avengers who carry out God’s wrath on the wrongdoers. 4) Servant of God, attending to taxation of the people. 5) Sent by God to punish those who do evil, and praise those who do good. These descriptions…include no indications of personal morality or Godliness being necessary….We must look to (a president’s) legislative actions to determine the greater good he might be doing for the nation.” Of course as Christians our example in word and deed is our Lord Jesus, not civil servants, as Dr. Brown says, and we are commanded to pray for all those in authority, for “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. Prov. 21:1

      Shari L Bradley
      August 3, 2019

Wow, Cathy, I love how Wanda lays that teaching out. We really didn’t need a gentle saint. Unbelievably, God gave us someone who loves America and its people; hates the injustices and corruption and actually is the only one in a long time who has the genius to bring a change so that we can have our country back. President John Kennedy had these aspirations (he wasn’t a saint either) and they killed him. And of course, they have tried to kill President Trump. Just one added note: watching Pres. Trump’s embrace of the ministry, his humble requests for prayer, his esteem towards Melania when she publicly recited The Lord’s Prayer – he IS a New Yorker, has had to mix and mingle with many “colorful” personalities, and he hasn’t been a Christian for very long. And I, for one, can completely see why he was God’s chosen leader for us! And I love watching him call out the Fake News Media, fool the Cabal, and strategizing with foreign leaders in order to root out corruption (the Deep State) and avoid the wars they always want us in.

        Cathy
        August 3, 2019

Totally agree, Shari! I don’t think there is anyone else on the planet able and willing to fight this war against the ruthless, murderous Deep State/global cabal. God put Donald Trump in office, and we must support him in every way possible, most especially with prayer. Thank God for President Trump. God bless President Donald Trump and all those working with him to save our country from evil, the depths of which few are aware.

Toni, thank you for your good words. I am one of those who have been harsh in my tone (feeling justified) because truth is truth. Because, like Peter who so quickly whacked off the ear of the soldier, I am impetuous. Because when it comes to God and country I am very strongly proctective. Because Jesus wrecked havoc in the temple courtyard because what they were doing was wrong. Because we are fighting Satan himself so of course I’m angry with any ground the enemy GAINS. Because, because, because. I am so ashamed of myself. I have always felt I needed to (strongly) defend Christ wherever and whenever the opportunity presented itself. To this day I cannot understand how a Christian can be a Democrat. I just can’t. Please pray for me that I will become more Christ like in my heart and mind that my responses will be soft and kind and loving. It’s very hard for me in these two categories. Blessings upon you from our Heavenly Father.

Thank you, Dr. Brown, for speaking the truth in love! We are to exhort one another daily, lest our hearts be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Sin IS deceitful by its very nature and will disguise itself as “justifiable” or “alright in this case” or “it’s not that bad”…let’s embrace the Spirit of truth when He speaks and repent when the Light shines into our darkness so we can be cleansed and changed!! Let’s return first to the sound teachings of our Christian faith and the Word of God, then America will be great again!
