I Prayed have prayed
Father, transform us by the renewing of our minds (Rom 12:2) so that we live as Your children. Show us where we need freedom from an orphan spirit in our lives.

Last week,  Dave Kubal shared a message for the nation about trading our freedom for security.  It focused on how the orphan spirit affects us on a governmental level. I’d like to share a response to that article that is deeply personal. You see, as I delved into the concept of an orphan spirit, I was struck by what I read–my eyes were opened to the conditions I had been living in all my life. Yes, the concepts of orphan spirit and sonship can be applied to how we respond to the coronavirus crisis. But it also describes how some of us are living personally. I believe that we can also benefit from a more personal look within.  I know I did.  I hope you will  be encouraged or enlightened. I would love to hear your thoughts, reflections, and testimony on this very personal subject.

An orphan spirit drives a sense of loneliness, abandonment, and isolation. It causes us to question our standing—both in safety, and in relationships with others.  The breakup of the family in America has certainly fed into the operation of the orphan spirit in our country. Although I haven’t experienced a breakup in my own family, I certainly experienced a lifetime of striving and struggle to feel worthy and valued.

An orphan spirit causes us to struggle with relating to our father figures—either our actual biological fathers, any authority figures (male or female), and especially our Heavenly Father. The enemy knows that if he can keep us from the fullness of our relationship with our Heavenly Father, we will lack the gifts, effectiveness, and blessing that God designed for us when he called Himself Father to us. (Rom 8:14-17)

What “fruit” does the orphan spirit produce?  Competition, rage, lack of self-esteem, jealousy, turmoil, insecurity, and striving to earn in our achievements and relationships. The orphan spirit can give way to addiction and self-indulgence as it seeks to find meaning and contentment. The orphan spirit robs us of right relationships that are healthy and fulfilling. Much of what drives those negative attitudes is the overarching perspective that we are not worthy. Whether it is a voice inside us that tells us that we do not measure up to others, or an unmet longing to have approval or inclusion, this wrong thinking robs us of a true perspective in relationships–both spiritually and interpersonally. Our reactions to situations can be skewed or disproportionate to the circumstance at hand. Look around. Finger-pointing, accusation, and fear is in abundance today. This is the orphan spirit.

But there is good news! We are not orphans and we don’t need to live like it! Scripture tells us the truth.

“But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.”   (Gal 4:4-7)

God is our Father, He has grafted us into His family and we can live as heirs–we are designed to enjoy that sonship that is talked about in Galatians. How can we move from orphan living to living in sonship? Here are six steps I used to start my journey to overcoming the orphan spirit in my life:

  1. Choose to turn from harboring the orphan spirit and enabling it in your life.
  2. Choose to forgive others that you have held responsible for your lack of happiness, worth, and security.
  3. Ask for forgiveness from those you have hurt as you have sought your own way, demanded praise, and lived in competition and jealousy.
  4. Ask God to forgive you and deliver you–and forgive yourself.
  5. Pray the blood of Jesus over any orphan spirit that has gained control in your life. Renounce the orphan spirit and tell it to go in the name of Jesus.
  6. Important next step: as we seek to cut off the orphan spirit in our own lives, we need to replace it with our right standing with the Father–the concept of sonship. This will be a daily act–declaring the truth of who God tells us we are in Him overrides the lies we have been believing for perhaps years or decades. I suggest a daily reading of Scriptures that reinforce to us just that. Here are a few to get you started: 2 Cor 5:17, Eph 2:10, 1 Pt 2:9, Rom 8:1, Jn 1:22, Eph 2:6, Jn 15:15, Eph 1:7.

What does sonship look like in contrast to the orphan spirit?

Humility. Living in sonship means that you can stop striving to show your “worth” and you can live from the place of “who’s you are.”

Kingdom-minded. When we have stopped focusing on getting accolades and approval from others, we can truly seek what God wants, and not what we want or think we need. This brings a greater capacity for working collaboratively with others as we are happy to share the ideas, the control, the blessings, and the credit.

Peace. There is a sense of greater peace when we can rest and trust in the Father’s direction for our lives. Without the pushing, finagling, demanding, and manipulation, we can enjoy the care, confidence, and peace of knowing our Father–who is all-knowing–is directing us.

Identity and purpose.  We are the children of the Lord of the universe–our identity is now of the highest pedigree. God the Father has a purpose for each of us. We will only find it when we look to His plans and purposes for our lives, instead of scratching out our own. The fulfillment that God can give us when we are in right sonship will be much greater than what we attempt to create.

Fulfilling relationships. Because we are no longer demanding, jockeying for position, and making it all about us, the people in our lives will find us more enjoyable and even attractive.  The love we seek will come to us when we are not demanding it, but more interested in bestowing it, under God’s power.

As we daily take on the mantle of sonship, let us declare that He is ours and we are His. Invite God the Father to guide and direct you–listening for moments of the Holy Spirit whisperings that tell us, “This is the way, walk in it.”  Let us pray that in this time of shaking our security in the natural, believers would look inward for how we can be set free from the orphan spirit and walk in the sonship God has designed for us. He wants to enjoy a relationship with us that is built on truth.

A nation of believers who have the proper perspective of who they are in Christ will be far more effective in intercession, more secure to speak against wrongdoing, and better able to live in unity with other believers. Look within first–it’s a good philosophy for us all. Let’s let God do something healing and freeing in our own hearts at this time.  Please share your experiences and thoughts in the comments below.

Thank you Kris for this real and practical article in the midst of what often feels like a deluge of hard and overwhelming news items. This issue is at the core of most idolatry in our nation – and the world. It is at the core of LGBT brokenness, Muslim ideology, and our love of money and possessions. Both the ‘prodigal son’, and his elder brother, suffered from this orphan spirit though it manifested differently in each. May we draw near to Him and allow Holy Spirit to stir up the cry of , Abba, Father!”

So good Chris what you have shared. Particularly in this age of homes without Fathers and the longings that children/adults have for a Father’s love. I think it truly impacts the ability for Christians to walk in total victory. it affects our faith, because our perception of God, the Father, will dictate our ability to have faith in Him. And so we transfer those characteristics of our earthly Fathers to God, the Father. Thus we are always searching for affirmation and when unable to get what we are seeking the fruit of that is evidenced in anger, jealousy, and all the other characteristics you listed. I truly believe victory comes in dealing with the orphan spirit. Thank you so much for sharing this. It is so relevant to our world today. God bless you.

Dave, I’m glad you wrote this reflection after your article last week about acting like orphans. Here you talk about the tragedy of trying to live only with our own resources rather than what God our Father has available for us. That explains well what Paul says about living like orphans.

Your article last week made it sound like if we obeyed government directives to combat the coronavirus, we were giving up our freedom, becoming orphans overcome with fear and running to be enslaved by the government. When a serious and unprecedented danger threatens the world like the virus, it makes sense to follow the counsel of experts available to government leaders to prevent widespread death. Sure, we know that death will only usher us into the presence of God, but we don’t want to easily give up the life he has given us here. Just seeking rescue doesn’t mean we are controlled by fear and panic.

So thank you for adding this week’s article celebrating life with our all-sufficient Father instead of trying to make it on our own.

I’ve been an orphan both literally and figuratively all of my 83 years on this earth. I’ve known the scriptures herein on a separate basis but have never combined them to make a composite picture of sonship with Adonai, and not orphanship. Now I see and understand, and can enlighten others simply by speaking these scriptures to them. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the above article. I’ve been studying over the last few weeks about being the daughter of the King. You article is so on point. John 14:18 – I promise I will never leave you helpless or abandon you as orphans- I will come back to you. I’m so thankful that I’m not an orphan, but a daughter who is loved.

One of the things that has helped me over the years is to cultivate the habit of speaking in tongues much. Take the Paul challenge seriously. I thank my God, I speak in tongues more than all of you. It cultivates the fruit of the spirit in your life, just as operating the other gifts will. There are lots of great promises in the scriptures that highlight the benefits of doing it. If you’ve never mined the scriptures for these promises, I highly suggest doing so. I was blessed to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit a little over 40 years ago. Not a day has gone by, since that experience have I ever not been aware of Fathers presence with me. My earthly Father deserted my family when I was in 6th grade. Our Heavenly Father never will. You have that within in! God Bless You All!

Long ago, an elderly lady in Florida handed me a long list of Bible verses she had written in her shaky hand writing and sweetly said “Honey, now that you’re saved, you need to know your true identity in Christ.” A few years later, the Lord drew me to put these verses into a little red booklet entitled “Who I am in Christ” … and also put them online. Please visit http://www.whoIaminChrist.net and freely print off sheets of these precious verses. We are no longer orphan children but loved and accepted by our heavenly Father!!! I pray that many of God’s people will accept their true identity. In Jesus mighty name.

This is so needed in the body of Christ. I didn’t have my dad around for most of my childhood. I lost my mom to sickness as a 15 year old kid. We did not have a godly home or upbringing. I was an orphan in the literal sense. Even after I was married, had children, and became a Christian I still had the orphan mentality. It made me miserable. I felt I had to strive to be loved, I had to perform to be good enough. God has delivered me from that. I pray for people I come across because having lived it, I can identify the orphan spirit. If we only knew how much sonship means to God. It’s not about what we do, but who we are. We are sons and daughters. That means more to God than any title. Father I pray for people, your people to know that they are known, loved, and valued, by you. I pray they know you don’t push us around, abuse us, and you will never abandon us. You are constant, patient, full of love and mercy. I pray for a fresh revelation of sonship over your people in Jesus name. Amen

Thanks Gloria–thanks for sharing your story. I think this spirit can strike many of us no matter what our family situation is/was. I had a very loving father, and I am not sure when this foothold entered my life, but I always remember feeling this way since I was very young. Some say there is no “orphan spirit,” but whatever someone wants to call it, this set of feelings, beliefs, and fruits are very real. So glad it resonated with you! Glad you are free! Thanks for your prayer over us all, my friend!

I was in a Master’s counselinh program when a Professor said, “you never knew your earthly father (an alcoholic) that is why you’re struggling with concepts of a heavenly father. It was the first step and has been ongoing since then.
Your points are valid and I still have to seek the Trinity daily for meaning in my life.
I still see so many suffering and the “blame game” is a convenient outlet.
Thank you for your coninued Godly advise to empower and heal, deliver, restore..

I am a person who had an orphan position in my life. negleted, abused in many ways. feeling unloved little parental involvement, lack of educational input. Feeling alone in a large family. But God changed my orphan spitit and placed his Spirit into my life. Now I am loved I have Gods family in my life. I have so much parental involvement, from my Heavenly Father,Jesus christ His son.God has taken me from a little education to a great education, especially in His word. It is amazing what God can do with one solitary life of one who accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Thank you for this article. I love this because this is my heart to disciple others in knowing who they are in Christ Jesus. There are 3 books that I Am using for discipleship and I highly recommend by Drs. Kerry and Chiqui Wood called “The Abba Journey” (Abba Foundation, Abba Factor, and the Abba Formation). They are all about our Orphan spirit vs Sonship. There is also a workbook with all three books. Dr. Kerry Wood has several books on his website at http://www.tableoffriends.com regarding Sonship. Soooo good.

If you are anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected] and I would delighted to share more.
Thank you again for sharing this article. Blessings to you.

Thank you for an excellent article on the fruit of the the orphan spirit and the fact that the Father has, through the death and resurrection of His Son, given us His spirit of adoption.

This has been a focus to walk in His spirit of adoption for some time now.

During this reset, some of that fruit still arises.

So I look forward with His hope for His help for a cleaner break from the orphan spirit into the sonship that He gave everything to provide for me.

May I live totally free from the orphan spirit and may He fully deliver all in the body of Christ who desire to walk in their true sonship to the Father.

I was an orphan as were my brother and sister: we have been orphans most of our lives — as little children we lost both parents — our young father to World War II, and a few years later losing our mother to sickness. BUT GOD is Father to the widow and the orphan! So here we are well into our old age–always a bit fearful and insecure as children, but otherwise perfectly normal–no addictions– and we all have led productive lives. I know little of the “Fruit of the orphan spirit” that you write about –Even when we didn’t know Him personally, GOD took care of us and to Him be all the glory.

Thank you for this article!! This is such universal truth no matter what religion or non religion.
Every human being has a built in need to be loved put there by THE Father Who so desires to fulfill that need. Only He can fill all our empty places and when we allow that, our focus begins to change from myself to others. Truly miraculous.

What a lot of pure pagan fabrication. The Bible doesn’t mention an orphan spirit. This is pre gnosticism, gnostic nonsense and a misinterpretation of Romans 8. Remember the rules guys if you going to quote and give scripture references. Context, Context, Context. Don’t take scripture to reinforce your bad Theology.

My intention is not to put you down. But to ask the question? What we are praying and teaching is it Biblical? Gnosticism and mysticism abounds. Christians are borrowing from all other faiths, talking christian lingo but it is not Christianity. Check out any good commentary. Matthew Henry, Spurgeon they nor the Bible never mention an orphan spirit. If it is not in the Bible, its not Theological. Best Stirling

GOD’S TIMING…
IS PERFECT!
Saturday I was hurt by my family and asked Holy Spirit to reveal what is was. He answered…”an orphan spirit.” I dealt with it and was set free from it but I needed more teaching.
This morning, as I’m reading the intercession prayers for the day, there was this amazing description of THE ORPHAN SPIRIT.
(You can’t make this stuff up.) There it was! It was there for many of us.
because…
GOD’S TIMING IS
PERFECT.

yes, thanks

there is no option but to live the sacrificial life, so many are being misled by both God wants you to Prosper or being sneaked into believing they’re saved by raising a hand (so you wont be embarrassed – Jesus in Matt 7:21ff says I don’t know you! ), saying a sinners prayer (which does not appear in Scripture !)

We have become Scripture ignorant, or like most Pharisees, blind to the obvious truth found in daily reading
